This week started with a fun project. Created the logo and a website for my pet project, PHiGGY (Figgers International). A changelog is included in the About page.
This project is mostly in the data wrangling stage. The goal is to make it as easy and painless as possible for people who grow ficus carica (edible fig trees) to enter basic information to gather where ‘Figgers’ are growing trees all over the globe.
Data gathered so far:
- Global Postal Codes with latitude and longitude coordinates relating back to the data people enter for their country code and zip code.NOTE: Not all country zip codes are available, or some zip codes are only partial zip codes, which are manually entered and/or supplemented as found.
- A short limited database of common fig tree varieties, which are just over 2,000 so far. This is to match with what people enter for the trees they grow.
- Five years of global climate data by zip code, by month has been gathered, but not yet loaded.
- Data entered by international fig collectors set up on the Get On The Map page of PHiGGY.ORG
- Google Analytics for tracking and reporting, which allowed for a start up report included in this post
